Antonia’s

Priorities

  • Education outcomes are achieved through accountability and accountability begins with transparency and ends with results. By harnessing the power of data, I aim to make informed decisions that maximize resources and improve education outcomes for students. I pledge an unwavering commitment to transparency in decision-making and rigorous accountability for student success.

  • I am committed to providing equitable access to resources and prioritizing the needs of our students in every decision. Furthermore, I am dedicated to working alongside community partners to advocate for the essential resources required to meet the diverse needs of our student body.

  • Educators play a vital role in improving student outcomes. I am dedicated to fostering a diverse, inclusive, and supportive environment for our educators in which they can thrive as they support student success.

I am thrilled to introduce myself.

My name is Antonia Watts (she/her).

I am the current District 2 representative for the Howard County School Board.

I live in Elkridge, Maryland with my husband and two young children who both attend Howard County public schools. I have served on the Board since December 2020. As such, I bring a wealth of knowledge and a proven track record of making a difference in the lives of our students and community.

I started my career as a bioengineer in crash and safety testing. In this role, I analyzed data and then derived cost-effective yet innovative solutions based on that data.

During this same time, I was leading a tutoring program for the NAACP and I loved it. I loved it so much that I decided to pursue teaching full-time . I received a Master in Education from the University of Michigan and became a classroom teacher. I have taught math and engineering at the middle, high school, and collegiate levels.

Currently, I work in K-12 math education which keeps me in tune with the needs and challenges faced by educators in an ever-demanding field.

With two children in public school and as the current Board of Education member, I understand the needs and challenges of both our children and our community. I am an active member of Delta Sigma Theta Sorority, Inc. where I volunteer to strengthen the community.

I am running for Board of Education in District 2 because it is urgent that we develop a system where every child has access to an education that fits their needs.

As a current Board member, my focus has centered on student achievement, educator support, and fiscal responsibility achieved through the development of strong accountability measures.

To improve the identification of reading difficulties, I increased access to a reading screening tool for all elementary school students. I added seven positions to special education to handle administrative duties, freeing our special educators to spend more time focused on students.

Additionally, I was instrumental in redesigning the budgetary process to increase community engagement and advocacy for funding for public education.

While I am proud of the accomplishments that I have highlighted, I am running because there is still much work to be done.

Together, we can create a school system that serves all students.
